Looking at the project pipeline for 2025, we are gearing up for initiatives that will not only build on past successes but also address additional social and environmental challenges. At the end of the day, we are constantly searching for new Horizons to make an impact.
From Horizon 2020 to Horizon Europe, Arctik has been working with some of Europe’s brightest research minds! Discover 3 new projects on the docket to foster collaboration on research and innovation (R&I) across Europe.
EXPECT: The algorithm for success
European summers have taken quite a noticeable dramatic turn, with extreme heat becoming a striking new reality in many hotspot areas. Launched in early 2024 and run under the oversight of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, EXPECT is making the development of capability for integrated attribution and prediction of regional climate changes the focus of its research output.
By addressing research gaps in atmospheric circulation and land-atmosphere interactions via model simulations, Earth observations and large datasets, EXPECT aims at uncovering patterns of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, droughts and floods. Ultimately, assessing the accuracy of climate models and acting on that knowledge can be a tool to improve climate predictions.

RURALITIC: A meeting of minds working in sync
With around a third of the EU population living in rural areas, the challenge of rural development is as pressing as ever. Under the ‘inspirational countryside’ concept, innovative rural areas can serve as benchmarks for replication.
RURALITIC will seek to uncover new pathways for boosting rural proofing, against a backdrop of decades-long socio-demographic change. Through a research-driven approach, the project will generate new insights, concepts and tools to understand rural transformations and equip policymakers with evidence-based strategies for more tailored rural development. The practical application of rural revival will unfold through a 4-pronged strategy: small-town business development, strategic planning, perception altering and creative thinking.
For many young people, environmental protection is a peak priority. This approach is meant to retain younger generations in rural areas. Drawing more of them into a resurgence of the socio-economic fabric of these areas then ultimately also means greening rural landscapes and ecosystems.

AEIP 2: Casting the net wide
For this project, which is the newest of the 3, Arctik is part of a growing ‘network of networks’ around the Africa-Europe Innovation Platform, bringing together African and European stakeholders to strengthen innovation ecosystems collaboratively and inclusively, in line with EU R&I programme goals.
Led by a consortium of experts, AEIP connects key players across the innovation value chain and works with outreach organisations to extend its impact. AEIP wishes to create lasting partnerships by supporting researchers, entrepreneurs, civil society, women and youth through virtual and in-person activities.
