Think you can navigate urban climate risks? Take the #MakeItReal quiz

Arctik developed a quiz to make complex climate-related information more accessible, engaging and relevant to urban adaptation

Record-breaking heatwaves, flash floods after intense rainfall and hazy skylines have made climate change increasingly visible in our cities. Yet, understanding what these changes mean and how cities should respond is not always straightforward. What counts as climate information? How is a prediction different from a projection? Does uncertainty make a climate model unreliable?

These are some of the questions explored in the #MakeItReal Roadshow quiz, an interactive tool developed by Arctik for the EU-funded Horizon Europe project Impetus4Change (I4C).

Turning climate science into an accessible experience

Impetus4Change brings together climate, urban and social science experts to improve the quality, accessibility and usability of near-term climate information for cities and regions. Arctik leads the project’s communication, dissemination and exploitation activities, helping translate research and tools into formats that people can understand and use.

For the I4C #MakeItReal Roadshow, our team designed an 11-question quiz exploring how cities can better understand and respond to climate risks. It goes beyond weather and climate data to include social and health indicators, local knowledge, and collaboration in shaping effective climate adaptation in urban settings.

The quiz is designed to do more than test what people already know. After each answer, users receive a concise explanation and, where relevant, a link to the underlying source. Questions about uncertainty, climate modelling, co-production and citizen participation become entry points for learning rather than a pass-or-fail exercise.

A different way to engage with climate information

At a time when people encounter  reliable evidence, misinformation and oversimplified claims about climate change, simply publishing more information is not enough. Science communication also needs to create opportunities to pause, participate, and question assumptions.

By asking users to choose an answer before revealing the explanation, the quiz makes climate learning active. The format can help bring common misconceptions to the surface, while clear feedback then points users towards evidence and wider context. While It does not replace deeper scientific information  direct action on disinformation, it offers a simple and engaging entry point  to topics that can otherwise feel technical or remote.

This approach reflects Arctik’s broader role in I4C: connecting scientific knowledge with the policymakers, practitioners and communities who can put it into action.

Making climate knowledge real

The quiz was created for the I4C #MakeItReal Roadshow, a multi-city initiative that brings climate information, mapping and analysis tools directly to people working on the future of European cities. It was first introduced at ECCA 2025 in Rimini as one of the hands-on activities at the IMPETUS Pit Stop, alongside a serious game on decision-making under extreme urban climate scenarios.

Last June, the Roadshow landed in Torgallmenningen, Bergen’s most iconic square, in Norway, where the 3rd edition of the Impetus 4 Change Climate Adaptalab was taking place with I4C partners, policymakers and representatives from local municipalities.

The Roadshow has taken the conversation across Europe, but the quiz remains open to everyone online. No specialist knowledge is required, only curiosity.
